In 2001, SAAV launched a then first-of-its kind foster program for the pets of domestic abuse victims in Dane County, Wisconsin. To provide shelter, SAAV works with our wonderful community partners, the Dane County Humane Society and Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. To date, SAAV has provided safe refuge for more than 300 animals affected by domestic violence in Dane County.

SAAV provides up to 90 days of temporary, safe, confidential shelter for the animals of victims who are receiving services from Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) in Dane County, Wisconsin at the time of application to SAAV. Shelter is typically provided through our foster network. The identity of the victim and foster parent is never shared. Victims receive updates from SAAV about their animals during the shelter period through their case worker at DAIS.

SAAV animals receive routine veterinary care at no cost, such as: physical examination, certain vaccinations, de-worming medication, flea medications/treatment, spay/neuter surgery (if elected). Emergency veterinary care is provided on a case-by-case basis based on the availability of funds.

At the time of reunion with their animals, SAAV provides a FurEver Together Basket to help survivors care for their animals, including: food (donated by Mounds Pet Food Warehouse), toys, one year of flea/tick preventative, one year of heart worm medication, and other care items.
